On Friday, 14th April, the first All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) of North eastern India was inaugurated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi in Assam’s Guwahati. The cornerstone of the premier institution was laid by PM Modi back in May 2017. The project has been completed with an expenditure of 1, 120 crore rupees, and will begin functioning with 150 beds, stepping up to 750 beds for full functionality.

AIIMS Guwahati was planned under the Pradhan Mantri Swasthya Suraksha Yojana (PMSSY). Patient care services at the hospital had begun in August 2022 with telemedicine, and limited OPD for the local residents had been initiated in September 2022.

PM Modi also laid the foundation of the Assam Advanced Healthcare Innovation Institute (AAHII), a project worth 546 crore rupees, which is a joint initiative of IIT Guwahati and the state government.

Most of the clinical departments at AIIMS Guwahati are already functioning with the OPD catering to around 150 patients every day. Services at the AIIMS include daycare, pharmacy, radiological investigations, and laboratory facilities. The hospital offers high-quality patient care services, along with super specialties including neurology, cardiology, burns and plastic surgeries, interventional radiology, and cardiothoracic and vascular surgeries.

PM Modi, addressing a gathering in Guwahati said, “Today, the north east has got its first AIIMS, and Assam has got three new medical colleges. In the last 9 years, we have worked on infra-projects and therefore, everyone talks about connectivity-related infrastructure projects”.
