Ghazipur BSP MP Afzal Khan disqualified from Lok Sabha

The brother of gangster Mukhtar Ansari, Afzal Ansari, who was a BSP Lok Sabha MP from the Ghazipur constituency of Uttar Pradesh, has been disqualified from the LS after being convicted and sentenced to prison for a period of 4 years. His Lok Sabha membership stands dissolved because of the Representation of the People Act, as per which, any member of the parliament, if convicted and sentenced to prison for 2 years or more, will be disqualified from the parliament.

Afzal Ansari was convicted and sentenced to prison on Saturday, 29th April, in a Gangsters Act case of 2007, pertaining to the kidnapping and murder of BJP MLA Krishnanand Rai, along with his brother, gangster Mukhtar Ansari, who has been sentenced to prison for 10 years.

Ghazipur BSP MP Afzal Khan disqualified from Lok Sabha -

In a notice released, the Lok Sabha Secretariat stated, “Consequent upon his conviction by the Court of Additional Sessions Judge, MP/MLA Court, Ghazipur, Uttar Pradesh in Special Trial/980/2012, Shri Afzal Ansari, Member of Lok Sabha representing the Ghazipur Parliamentary Constituency of Uttar Pradesh stands disqualified from the membership of Lok Sabha from the date of his conviction, i.e., 29th April, 2023 in terms of the provisions of Article 102(1)(e) of the Constitution of India read with Section 8 of the Representation of the People Act, 1951”.
