On Thursday, July 13, Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal, announced the closure of all private and government schools situated across the low-lying areas, which have been inundated with floodwater because of the Yamuna swelling for the last few days. Currently, the level of River Yamuna is at a dangerous 208.48 metres, after it started swelling three days earlier.

On Monday night, the river crossed the evacuation mark of 206 metres, which led to the evacuation and relocation of people who reside in the low-lying areas, vulnerable to flooding, to safer locations.

Tweeting in Hindi, Kejriwal said, ‘All government and private schools are being closed in areas of Delhi where water is filling up.’

In a circular issued by the Directorate of Education (DoE), it has been mentioned, ‘As waters of River Yamuna crossed the danger mark, the heads of all the government and private schools in affected areas are hereby ordered to ensure safety of the students. All schools in low-lying areas, where there is an imminent danger of flooding must be closed with immediate effect, without waiting for any further orders.’

‘Areas like East, Northeast, North, Southeast, and Central districts have been affected and all schools in these districts must be closed with immediate effect without waiting for any further orders.’, the notice further reads. The zonal and district authorities have also been directed to remain in touch with the schools and provide the required support.
