Manipur violence shameful; there should be capital punishment for rape: Shanta Kumar

Shimla:  Terming the prolonged violence in BJP-ruled Manipur as “shameful”, former BJP stalwart Shanta Kumar has said that rape incidents against women in the North Eastern state and other parts of the country should be dealt with by meting out capital punishment.

The former Himachal Pradesh Chief Minister and Union Minister Shanta Kumar came up with a Facebook post stating that incidents like Manipur and in other states of the world’s largest democracy are “very shameful”.

“The disappearance of 13 lakh girls and women in the country in three years is even more shameful and it is most shameful that all these incidents are not even considered in the Parliament of this largest democracy of the world. ” the former union minister said in his chaste Hindi comment.

Taking on the current crop of politicians, he said when the whole country is shedding tears, the leaders are fighting. (They are) Baking the bread of votes… May God bless everyone.” he commented sarcastically.

Referring to the Manipur violence and specially the parading of naked women and their rape, Shanta Kumar states in the post ” Never thought that India’s democracy would fall to this extent. What kind of nectar festival(Amrit Utsav) is being celebrated.”

The former Union minister also appealed to protesting MPs in both Houses that Parliament should rise above the party walls and have a serious long discussion on the serious issue.

Terming the recent Manipur incidents as a stigma for the country, he sought changes in the deterrent laws to deal with cases of crime against women, He suggested that such crimes should be decided in a special fast-track court within a three-month time frame and there should be capital punishment for rapes in the country.
