Shahjahanpur (UP): A criminal accused of killing a professor and injuring his seven family members was killed in an encounter with the police in Katra area of Shahjahanpur district in Uttar Pradesh, a senior officer said on Wednesday.

Superintendent of Police (SP) Ashok Kumar Meena said that Ashok Kumar Gupta, a resident of Bazar Gher locality, and his family members were stabbed by criminals during a loot attempt on Tuesday.

“While Ashok Kumar, who was a professor at a private university, died on the spot, his seven family members, including children, were injured and were admitted to a private hospital,” he said.

He said that two criminals, Shahwaz and Sahroj, were arrested immediately after the incident.

“On the complaint of the victim’s side, a case was lodged against two named and eight unidentified persons. The murder weapon was recovered on the identification of the accused,” he said.

The SP said that while the accused were being taken for medical examination late on Tuesday evening before being produced in court, Shahwaz snatched the pistol of Sub-Inspector Hitesh Tomar and attempted to flee. “When challenged by the police team, Shahwaz (25) opened fire and was injured in retaliatory firing,” he said.
