Beirut: The issue of normalizing relations between Syria and Israel has been practically resolved, and an agreement may be signed in the coming months, Lebanese newspaper Ad-Diyar reported, citing sources.

At the same time, Lebanon is under increasing pressure to persuade the government to take a similar step – simultaneously with Syria or soon after it, the report said on Monday. At the beginning of this year, Washington set a time frame for achieving both agreements, the report added.

During his last visit to Beirut at the end of June, US Special Envoy for Syria Thomas Barrack reportedly conveyed proposals to the Lebanese leadership related to the solution of the issue of disarming the Hezbollah movement and the possibility of normalizing relations with Israel. However, the Lebanese leadership does not yet have a unified position on the US proposal, the newspaper reported.

On Monday, Israeli Foreign Minister Gideon Saar said that Israel is interested in normalizing diplomatic ties with Syria and Lebanon while safeguarding its security interests.
