Agartala: Following the inaction by Tripura government on the High Court’s directive, TIPRA Motha founder and royal scion Pradyot Kishore Debbarman on Monday announced that he will approach the Supreme Court to demand early village council elections in the Tripura Tribal Areas Autonomous District Council (TTAADC).

Debbarman, whose party is an alliance partner in the BJP-led state government, said the delay in holding village council polls amounts to a violation of democratic rights in the Sixth Schedule area.

“The very purpose of the ADC to empower people and strengthen governance at the grassroots has been undermined by the failure to hold elections to local bodies,” Pradyot observed.

“Village council elections are long due, and I will file a case in the Supreme Court demanding early polls for the benefit of the indigenous people,” Debbarman said.

The High Court of Tripura had earlier directed the state government to hold the village council elections, but it had not been held yet, without assigning any reason.

Condemning the recent spate of violence where allegedly TIPRA Motha cadres allegedly assaulted BJP supporters during the event of PM’s Maan Ki Baat last week, Debbarman urged for restraint and called for a peaceful political environment.

“Attempts are being made to provoke our supporters. But we believe in constitutional methods. I will take the legal route to ensure village council elections are held without delay,” he added.
