New Delhi: Supreme Court today initiated suo motu contempt of court proceedings against advocate Prashant Bhushan and Twitter India for his derogatory tweets against the apex court.

A three-judge bench comprising Justices Arun Mishra, BR Gavai and Krishna Murari will hear the matter on Wednesday.

Bhushan, who has been raising issues related to the judiciary, had last month posted a tweet on the micro-blogging site, drawing sharp reactions from various quarters.

He tweeted: “When historians in future look back at the last 6 years to see how democracy has been destroyed in India even without a formal Emergency, they will particularly mark the role of the Supreme Court in this destruction, & more particularly the role of the last 4 CJIs,” he had tweeted on June 27.

Bhushan also openly criticised the top court over its handling of the matters related to migrant workers amid the COVID-19 pandemic.
