Washington/Canberra: Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese and his Canadian counterpart, Justin Trudeau, congratulated Keir Starmer, the leader of the UK Labour Party, on his victory in the United Kingdom’s general election on Friday.
“Congratulations to my friend and new UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer on his resounding election victory. I look forward to working constructively with the incoming UK Labour Government,” Albanese said on X.
Trudeau also congratulated Starmer on the election outcome, saying that the victory was “historic.”
“Lots of work is ahead to build a more progressive, fair future for people on both sides of the Atlantic. Let’s get to it, my friend,” Trudeau said in a social media post.
The predecessor of outgoing UK Prime Minister Rishi Sunak, Liz Truss, lost her parliamentary seat with 11,217 votes, conceding the Norfolk South West constituency to Labour candidate Terry Jermy, Sky News reported later in the day.
Elections to the parliament of the United Kingdom took place on Thursday, with the Labour Party winning a landslide victory. The Labour Party has so far won 409 seats in the 650-seated House of Commons after votes have been processed in 639 parliamentary constituencies out of 650. This is the most seats won by Labour since 1997, when Tony Blair became prime minister.
The leader of the party that wins the parliamentary election becomes the country’s prime minister and forms a new government. Labour’s victory will end the 14-year rule of the Tories.
