New Delhi: President Droupadi Murmu on Wednesday condemned the way Vice President Jagdeep Dhankhar was ‘humiliated” inside the Parliament Complex and said people of India expected elected representatives to adhere to the norms of “dignity and courtesy”.

Without taking any names, Murmu said she was “dismayed to see the manner in which our respected Vice President was humiliated in the Parliament complex “.

In a post on X , The President urged elected representatives to uphold the parliamentary tradition “we are proud of “.

“Elected representatives must be free to express themselves, but their expression should be within the norms of dignity and courtesy. That has been the parliamentary tradition we are proud of, and the people of India expect them to uphold it,” Murmu said on the social media platform.

On Tuesday, suspended Trinamool Congress Lok Sabha member Kalyan Banerjee was seen mimicking Dhankhar, who is also the ex-officio Chairman of the Rajya Sabha, on the steps of Parliament’s Makar Dwar.

The Trinamool MP was surrounded by other opposition leaders, while Congress leader Rahul Gandhi appeared to be filming the incident.

In the clip, Banerjee can be heard mimicking Dhankhar’s conduct of Upper House proceedings with gesticulations. “My spine is so straight; I’m so tall ”, said Banerjee, imitating Dhankhar.

Dhankhar has expressed his disapproval of Banerjee’s mimicry of him, calling it “ridiculous” and “shameful”.

Dhankhar’s remarks came amid continued protests by the opposition, which has been demanding a discussion on the Parliament security breach that took place on December 13.

So far, a total of 141 MPs have been suspended for “unruly behaviour”. 95 of them are from the Lok Sabha and 46 from the Rajya Sabha.
