Shillong: The Regional Democratic Alliance (RDA), a conglomeration of two major regional political parties, has decided to field former Hynniewtrep Youth Council (HYC) president, Robertjune Kharjahrin from the Shillong Parliamentary seat for the 2024 Lok Sabha polls.

The United Democratic Party (UDP) and Hill State People’s Democratic Party (HSPDP) are also constituents in the ruling Meghalaya Democratic Alliance led by National People’s Party (NPP).

RDA chairman and UDP president, Metbah Lyngdoh said Kharjahrin will contest on the symbol of the UDP, the drum.

He also said the RDA also decided that the alliance would continue even for the upcoming district council elections.

Elections to the Khasi Hill Autonomous District Council and Jaintia Hill Autonomous District Council are scheduled to be held in 2024.

So far, the ruling NPP and opposition Voice of the People Party (VPP) have announced their candidates for the Lok Sabha election from Meghalaya.

NPP has named cabinet minister Ampareen Lyngdoh for the Shillong seat and sitting MP Agatha Sangma for the Tura seat.

The VPP has fielded its general secretary Ricky A J Syngkon as the candidate from Shillong seat.

The Congress however has decided to complete the process of identifying the candidates from the two seats by January 2024.

The final decision will be taken by the party high command.
