Gujarat Assembly polls: AIMIM announces three candidates

Hyderabad: After making a political entry into Maharashtra, Bihar, West Bengal, Hyderabad-headquartered All India Majlis-E-Ittehadul Muslimeen (AIMIM) is now contesting in Gujarat Assembly polls 2022.

The party on Saturday night announced three candidates for the upcoming Gujarat Assembly Polls.

AIMIM President Gujarat State and Former MLA Sabir Kabliwala will contest from Jamalpur Assembly constituency, Kaushika Parmar from Danilimda assembly and Wasim Qureshi will contest from Surat East Assembly segment, the party said in a statement.

The election to the 182-member Gujarat Assembly is expected to be held by December.

Earlier, the party had won 25 corporator seats in local body elections in Gujarat, including seven in Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation and remaining in Modasa, Godhra and Bharuch local bodies.

There were 44 MLAs from the Patel community in Gujarat Assembly compared to only three legislators from the Muslim community although the population of both the community was almost 11 per cent each.

The party, which is the second largest party in Telangana Legislative Assembly, has a significant presence in Maharahstra with Imtiyaz Jaleel winning the Aurangabad constituency and also registered a big score in Maharahstrea Municipal Corporation election.

The party also made inroads in Bihar, winning five Legislative Assembly seats in 2020.

The party also decided to foray into Congress-ruled Rajasthan, where December 2023 elections to be held for the 200-members state assembly.

The Hyderabad-based party has not contested any election in Rajasthan so far and has set up a state unit of the party.
