Guv rushes to remote Basanti in Bengal where TMC supporter killed in poll-related violence

Kolkata: Hours after alighting from a long-distance train on Monday morning from violence-riddled Cooch Behar, West Bengal Governor C V Ananda Bose rushed to remote Basanti in South 24 Parganas to meet the survivors of a TMC supporter, who was murdered in clashes related to three-tier July 8 Panchayat election.

Official sources said Bose left for Basanti around 1130 hours after a brief halt at Canning Irrigation Guest House where the TMC worker (Ziarul Mollah) was shot dead in pre-poll violence on Saturday night.

Mollah was shot in his head and died on the spot, sources added.

Raj Bhavan sources said Bose during his return had a telecon with the bereaved family members and assured assistance.

Bose moved to Basanti immediately detraining from the Padatik Express.

Bose will visit the Phul Malancha area in Basanti block where he will meet the bereaved family members and also take stock of the situation on ground zero.

So far as many as 13 people have been killed in Panchayat poll-related violence ever since the election was announced on June 8.

The election is slated for July 8.

It might be mentioned that the Guv had to rush to Cooch Behar as pre-poll violence erupted in the district.
