Bengaluru: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Wednesday said India has jumped to the 40th rank in the Global Innovation Index this year.

“In 2015, we were ranked 81,” he said in a pre-recorded message at the Bengaluru Tech summit.

Modi said the number of unicorns in India has doubled since 2021 and it is now the third-largest startup in the world.

“India has over 81,000 recognized startups and 100s of international companies having R&D centres in India due to India’s talent pool,” he said.

He also said India has shown how to give technology a human touch.

In India, technology is a force of equality and empowerment, and the world’s largest health scheme, Ayushman Bharat provides a safety net for nearly 200 million families, Modi said.

He said Bengaluru is the home of technology and thought leadership and is inclusive, besides an innovative city. “For many years, Bengaluru has been number 1 on India’s Innovation Index,” he said.

India is using tech as a weapon in the war against poverty, the prime minister said.
