New Delhi: Amid the rising escalation in the Middle East, India on Wednesday said it is closely monitoring the security situation in the region and advised Indian nationals to avoid all non-essential travel to Iran.

In a travel advisory, the Ministry of External Affairs also asked Indians residing in Iran to remain vigilant and stay in contact with the Indian Embassy in Tehran.

“We are closely monitoring the recent escalation in security situation in the region.

“Indian nationals are advised to avoid all non-essential travel to Iran. Those currently residing in Iran are requested to remain vigilant and stay in contact with the Indian Embassy in Tehran.”

Iran said it had fired 200 missiles at Israel on Tuesday.

The Middle East appeared to be on the brink of huge escalation as Israel vowed on Tuesday night that it would conduct “powerful strikes” across the region in revenge for Iran’s missile barrage.

Tehran also threatened that if Israel responded to the attack, it would retaliate again. That was followed up by Iran’s proxies in Iraq stating they would attack US bases in the country.

The rising threats came as Israel staged a significant ground operation into southern Lebanon against Hezbollah, with reports that Israeli tanks had advanced into the country.
