Srinagar: On the eve of Independence Day, security has been stepped up across Srinagar and other parts of Kashmir, with the main function scheduled to be held at Bakshi Stadium, where Chief Minister Omar Abdullah will take the salute.

A multi-tier security cover has been put in place around the stadium to ensure the peaceful conduct of the event. In Srinagar, police have deployed spotters on high-rise buildings to monitor the situation, while plainclothes personnel are keeping a close watch. Drones are also being used to strengthen surveillance.

“All security arrangements have been put in place for the smooth conduct of Independence Day,” a senior security official said, adding that vehicle and pedestrian checking has been intensified over the past few days.

While the security remains tight, the atmosphere in the city is generally relaxed.
The officials said on eve of Independence Day vigil along the border has been tightened to prevent any infiltration attempts.

In north Kashmir, security forces are on high alert in the border districts of Baramulla, Kupwara, and Bandipora.

“It is always that on August 15 every security agency remains alert. … We are taking all necessary security measures,” said Deputy Inspector General of Police (North Kashmir) Maqsood-ul-Zaman.

Only yesterday an Army soldier was killed in a gunfight near the Line of Control in Uri sector of Baramulla district during an encounter with infiltrators or a suspected Border Action Team (BAT) squad.

According to the officials, Health, Education and Social Welfare Minister Sakina Itoo will preside over celebrations in Anantnag, Agriculture and Rural Development Minister Javid Ahmad Dar in Baramulla. District Development Council chairpersons in Kupwara, Bandipora, Ganderbal, Budgam, Shopian, Kulgam, and Pulwama will lead the celebrations.

This year, the Jammu and Kashmir government succeeded in mobilising thousands of residents for multiple Tiranga Yatras across the Valley.
