Telangana: IKP to set up Rs 340 cr Biomanufacturing Hub to boost Innovation in Life Sciences

Hyderabad: IKP Knowledge Park (IKP) announced to set up Rs 340 crore ‘Biomanufacturing Hub’ to boost innovation in Life sciences.

Comply with GMP guidelines, the state-of-the-art multi-product facility, to come up in 3.2 acres, built-up area of over 1.27 lakh Square feet of building space at IKP campus, Genome Valley here, said IKP Chairman and CEO Deepanwita Chattopadhyay, after inaugurating ‘The Narayanan Vaghul Building” at IKP premises, here on Monday on the occasion of 25th year celebration of the campus which started actually on October 28, 1999.

She said the new hub is expected to be operational by next 2 years, marking another step towards IKP’s commitment to fostering innovation in the life sciences sector.

It is a shared facility for all the startups that are growing so fast and really need CDMP facilities for their clinical grade material, she said that the estimated cost of the facility is Rs 340 crore but we have started with the Rs 50 crores on the building and we are raising funds.

Because it’s a CGMP facility and all the equipment, it’s actually a high-cost investment, she said.

“We look forward to having this in the next 24 months, a fully accreted CDMP facility, which hopefully will be accepted by USFDA and MEA and others, ” the CEO said.

The Ground plus three structure facility, target accreditation for LEED and WELL Gold, she said the first block for Biomanufacturing facility while second block for multipurpose facility and housing diverse research groups.

Target for separate manufacturing platforms, the integrated fill-finish facility for both liquid and lyophilized and to support facilities for GMP bio Analytical and QC, she said .

Process Development laboratory (PDL), support facilities for GMP Operations such as Clean utilities, Raw material and storage, she said that a dedicated floor for focused Cell and Gene Therapy Besides Cell banking also came up.

Facility critical success factors including Intellectual Property and confidentiality; skilled GMP Technical Manpower; Quality of Infra and Equipment; Faster Single Window Statutory Clearance; Documentation support with highly maintained regulatory compliance process; global Biomanufacturing market and product focus, she informed.

Target user segment to encourage collaborative research environment; top industry trends – Automation, Single Use Technology, Industry 4.0, she said on Tuesday.

To a question, she said Today, we have created 15,000 jobs through our companies and at least another 15,000 to 30,000 people will be benefited from this facility where various companies come to create their jobs in their distributed facility.

It’s a whole ecosystem that’s getting the main focus on bio pharmaceuticals, large molecules in biosimilars and novel molecules and also cell and gene therapy, she said.

We are looking at various collaborations but I cannot name them because I have not signed as yet, she said that we have eight startups who have already committed and two of them from Hyderabad city including Hyderabad University startup.

So it is a big collaboration. We are also working with the central government, with the Department of Biotechnology and BIRAC on this, she informed.

“Expansion plans outside genome valley have not been decided as yet. But we would like to explore collaborations globally through another agency, she added.
