Agartala: The Tripura government has announced the installation of at least 50,000 solar plants across the state in 2025 under the Pradhan Mantri Surya Ghar Muft Bijli Yojana (PMSGMBY) as an initiative to promote clean energy, said Power Minister Ratan Lal Nath.

“We have so far installed 12,800 solar plants to accelerate efforts to generate power at the household level for meeting the electricity requirement of the families, reducing dependence on conventional power sources,” Nath stated.

He said India under Prime Minister Narendra Modi had resolved to popularise renewable energy as part of its climate change mitigation goal, and in February last year, PMSGMBY was launched, aiming to tap non-conventional energy even at the household level.

“This has not only contributed to curbing the emission of greenhouse gases but also saved the electricity bill of the households. The excess electricity generated at the household level from solar plants would be going to the power grid, and Tripura State Electricity Corporation Ltd (TSECL) will pay for it,” Nath underlined, adding that it has made a significant push toward renewable energy.

He said under the scheme, the government is offering up to Rs 85,800 subsidy for a 3-kilowatt power generation system, while smaller 1-kilowatt and 2-kilowatt units will get Rs 33,000 and Rs 66,000 subsidies, respectively. A 1-kilowatt plant can generate 100 units of electricity per month, reducing household power bills and enabling consumers to sell surplus energy.

“This initiative is not just about sustainability; it’s about financial empowerment,” Nath emphasised, adding that solar systems can be installed on rooftops, tin sheds, or open spaces and have a lifespan of 25 years. To maximise outreach, the government is conducting registration camps across Tripura, urging residents to join the scheme.
