When in Goa, Be Like the Goans

India is a tapestry of diverse cultures, each state carrying its unique rhythm, values, and way of life. As a traveller, one of the greatest virtues is adaptability – the ability to embrace and respect the ethos of the place you’re visiting. Nowhere is this more evident than in Goa, where the laid-back, inclusive, and harmonious lifestyle starkly contrasts with the often fast-paced or rigid attitudes found elsewhere.

Goa, with its sun-kissed beaches, vibrant culture, and susegad way of life, demands not just a visit but an alignment of spirit. What might work in the bustling streets of Delhi or the industrious vibe of Mumbai could feel entirely out of place here. To truly experience Goa, you need to recalibrate your behaviour and attitude to sync with its unique culture.

Leave the Hustle Behind

In many Indian states, life revolves around a breakneck pace. The hustle of metro cities, where time is money and efficiency is king, might earn you respect elsewhere, but in Goa, it’s out of tune. Goans prioritize balance and leisure over urgency and deadlines. The hurried attitude that serves you well in business hubs will only alienate you here. Slow down, let the pace of the ocean waves set your tempo, and remember that in Goa, everything happens in its own time.

Relax the Formalities

In many parts of India, hierarchical interactions and formalities dominate social and professional exchanges. While respect is essential everywhere, Goans tend to value openness, simplicity, and camaraderie. A rigid or overly formal demeanor might come across as standoffish. Instead, adopt a warm, approachable attitude. Greet with a smile, join a local conversation, and you’ll find doors – and hearts – opening with ease.

Temper the Aggression

In states where competition is fierce, assertiveness and a “go-getter” mindset are celebrated. However, this aggressive demeanor can clash with Goa’s ethos of harmony and community living. Goans dislike unnecessary confrontation or loud behavior. If you’re accustomed to pushing your way through crowded markets or demanding immediate attention, you’ll need to dial it down. Here, patience, politeness, and mutual respect reign supreme.

Adapt Your Dress and Conduct

In more conservative parts of India, modest dressing and reserved behavior are the norm. While Goa’s culture is rooted in tradition, it’s also deeply cosmopolitan and open-minded. Dressing boldly or casually, enjoying nightlife, or mingling freely in public is commonplace here. Conversely, bringing an overly conservative or judgmental attitude might make you stand out awkwardly. Embrace Goa’s openness, but always balance it with respect for local customs, especially in sacred spaces.

Party with Responsibility

Goa’s vibrant nightlife is legendary, attracting visitors from across the globe. However, bringing reckless behavior, such as loud drunkenness, littering, or disrespecting locals, is a surefire way to lose the goodwill of the Goan community. While other states may tolerate or even overlook such conduct, Goa demands a higher standard of responsibility from its visitors. Enjoy the parties, but ensure you leave the beaches as pristine as you found them and respect the tranquility of the local neighborhoods.

Respect the Local Way of Life

In industrialized or agricultural states, life often revolves around work or rigid routines. Goa, however, thrives on a communal, easy-going lifestyle. Bargaining aggressively in markets, rushing a restaurateur, or dismissing local traditions might work elsewhere, but in Goa, it’s considered bad form. Respect the unspoken rules of susegad: go with the flow, celebrate life’s small joys, and don’t take things too seriously.

Learn to Appreciate, Not Compare

Finally, one of the most important lessons is to leave behind the habit of comparison. Goa is not Mumbai, Delhi, or Bangalore – and it doesn’t want to be. Comparing Goa’s pace, infrastructure, or customs to other states will only distance you from its essence. Instead, immerse yourself in its distinct charm. Appreciate the slower pace, the warm hospitality, and the way Goans prioritize life over work.

When in Goa, be like the Goans. Shed the attitudes and behaviors that serve you elsewhere but clash with the spirit of this coastal paradise. Goa is a state that teaches you to live in the moment, savor simplicity, and find joy in life’s natural rhythms. Respect its culture, adapt to its pace, and you’ll not only enjoy your time here but also take home a lesson in the art of truly living.
