Kolkata sports scribes to award Commonwealth Games winners

Kolkata: The Calcutta Sports Journalists Club (CSGC) has announced to award the Commonwealth Games medal winners Achinta Sehuli and Saurav Ghosal, for their achievements during the annual awards giving ceremony here at the club premises on Wednesday.

” Achinta Sehuli and Saurav Ghosal, the two Indians who made the country proud in the Birmingham Commonwealth Games, will be among the recipients at the Annual Awards programme of the Calcutta Sports Journalists’ Club (CSJC), to be held on October 26,” a statement said here on Tuesday.

” Achinta and Saurav will be given the Sportsperson of the Year award in recognition of their momentous feats in Weightlifting and Squash. Achinta lifted the 73kg weight class gold with a Games record to boot in Birmingham while Saurav continued his unparalleled achievements in the world of Squash by winning a bronze each in the men’s singles and mixed doubles event. ”

Saurav, who became the first Indian to break into the top-10 of PSA rankings, showed his class once again as he outplayed a number of big names from the world of Squash to become the first Indian to win a singles medal in the Games’ history.

Special awards will be given to promising star: Adrian Karmakar (shooting) while Bengal’s own cricket star Manoj Tiwary will be getting the best cricketer’s award. East Bengal midfielder Souvik Chakraborty, table tennis champion Sutirtha Mukherjee, chess Grandmaster Mitrabha Guha, Almas Kabir, who has set the athletics tracks ablaze with his exceptional performances, and volleyball star Umar Faruk Halder are some of the prominent names in the State Award list.

The awards will be supported by Kolkata Thunderbolts and Banyan Tree Group.
