Snow, rain dip mercury in Kashmir

Srinagar: Widespread rain lashed plains while higher altitudes received snow in Kashmir Valley, including the ski resort of Gulmarg, that caused a drop in temperature on Monday.

The Meteorological Department Srinagar forecast fairly widespread light to moderate rain/snow/traces over Jammu and Kashmir in the next 12 hours, followed by significant improvement in weather on Tuesday.

The traditional Mughal road connecting Shopian district in south Kashmir to Rajouri and Poonch districts of Jammu region remained closed for the second consecutive day Monday due to snowfall on Peer Ki Gali.

The Srinagar-Sonamarg-Gumri road connecting the Ladakh Union Territory also remained shut due to snowfall at Sonamarg and Zojila Pass for the second consecutive day.

The Jammu and Kashmir Traffic police have advised people to undertake journeys on the Srinagar-Jammu National Highway only after confirming status of the road from Traffic Control Units of Jammu and Srinagar in view of shooting stones occurring at various places due to heavy rainfall on Monday.

Gulmarg in north Kashmir received yet another spell of snowfall much to the delight of the tourists visiting there.

Reports reaching here said that more than a foot of snow has accumulated in the meadow. The tourists were seen frolicking in the snow on Monday.

Gulmarg recorded a low of minus 4.5 degrees Celsius against minus 3.6 degrees on the previous night and it was 6.1 degrees Celsius below normal.

Reports of snowfall was also received from Sonamarg (2 inches), Sadhna Top in Kupwara (2 feet), Machhil (3 inches) in frontier Kashmir district of Kupwara and Razdan Top and Dawar Gurez (3 inches) in Bandipora district in north Kashmir and Pir pPanjal Range of mountains in south Kashmir also experienced snowfall.

Srinagar and its adjoining areas lashed by widespread rain for the second consecutive day resulted in considerable drop in temperature.

Srinagar recorded a low of 4.2 degrees Celsius against 5.2 degrees on the previous night. It also received 30.4mm of rainfall.

Pahalgam in south Kashmir settled at 1.6 degrees Celsius against 2.1 degrees on the previous night and it also received 19.1mm of rainfall till 8.30 am, while Qazigund recorded a low of 5.4 degrees Celsius against 5.5 degrees on the previous night and received 36.3mm of rainfall during the period.

Kokernag recorded a low of 4.6 degrees Celsius against 5 on the previous night and experienced 24.6mm of rainfall.
