New Delhi: The Central government Sunday notified the appointment of Bombay High Court Chief Justice Dipankar Datta as Supreme Court judge.
The Supreme Court Collegium had recommended Justice Datta’s elevation to the apex court on September 26, this year.
“In exercise of the power conferred under the Constitution of India, Justice Dipankar Datta has been appointed as Judge of the Supreme Court of India. I extend my best wishes to him,!” Minister of Law and Justice of India, Kiren Rijiju, in his tweet said.
Justice Datta’s name was recommended by the Supreme Court Collegium headed by former Chief Justice Uday Umesh Lalit on September 26.
Justice Datta was born on February 9, 1965. He obtained his LL.B. (Bachelor in Law) degree from the University of Calcutta in 1989 and enrolled as an advocate on November 16, 1989. He practised mainly in the Calcutta High Court, as well as in Supreme Court and other High Courts in civil, constitutional and many other matters. He was made a permanent judge of Calcutta High Court on June 22, 2006. He was subsequently elevated as Chief Justice of the Bombay High Court on April 28, 2020.
Justice Datta will retire on February 08, 2030. According to the Constitution of India, a judge of the Supreme Court retires at the age of 65.
The current strength of judges in the Supreme Court is 27, as against the sanctioned strength of 34.
In the next one year, till December 2023, nine senior Supreme Court judges will retire. They are as follows.
Justice Kaul will retire on December 25, 2023. Justice Nazeer will retire on January 04, 2023. Justice Jospeh will retire on June 16, 2023. Justice M R Shah will retire on May 15, 2023. Justice Ajay Rastogi will retire on June 17, 2023. Justice Dinesh Maheshwari will retire on May 14, 2023. Justice Krishna Murari will retire on July 08, 2023. Justice S Ravindra Bhat will retire on October 20, 2023. Justice V Ramasubramanian will retire on June 29, 2023.
