SMC to have 34 wards now, Govt dismisses process of delimitation

Shimla: To come out of legal wrangling and conduct civic body poll soon, in a big political decision Congress government toppled the former Jairam Thakur Goverment half baked decision to increase the Shimla Municipal Corporation ward from thirty four to forty one.

Himachal Pradesh Governor Rajinder Vishavnath Arhlekar promulgated an ordinance on Tuesday set asiding previous government this decision. Importantly, number of MC wards were increased to 41 by previous government and after prolonged delimitation process, it couldn’t able to complete since last one year moreover Election was due in June, 2022 was being delayed. Shimla MC is working without elected house for one year and Deputy Commissioners Shimla is designated as defecto administrator.

The government decision to revert SMC ward to previous strength would help to end the legal wrangling and impasse forced the state election commission to not hold Election for last one year.

The process of delimitation was challenged by the two petitioner in Himachal Pradesh High court as it was challenged and stayed by court in the five MC ward . Now it was expected that the process may require a month more to finalize the electrol roll afresh in 34 old wards and announced poll by State Election Commission. In Shimla MC poll likely to be held in early March after a gap of two months.
