Bhutan King arrives to warm welcome, received by EAM Jaishankar

New Delhi: Bhutan King Jigme Khesar Namgyel Wangchuck arrived in the capital Monday afternoon on a three-day official visit. He was received by External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar at the airport, signifying the closeness in the bilateral ties.

EAM Jaishankar, in a tweet on welcoming the Bhutan King, said the visit will further strengthen the close and unique India-Bhutan partnership.

“Honoured to welcome His Majesty the King of Bhutan, Jigme Khesar Namgyel Wangchuck, on his arrival in India.

“His visit will further strengthen the close and unique India-Bhutan partnership.”

Ministry of External Affairs spokesperson Arindam Bagchi in a tweet said:

“Warm welcome to India, Your Majesty!

“His Majesty the King of Bhutan, Jigme Khesar Namgyel Wangchuck arrived in India a short while ago. His Majesty was received by EAM @DrSJaishankar at the airport.”

King Jigme Khesar Namgyel Wangchuck, who is visiting India on the invitation of President Droupadi Murmu, will hold talks with Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Tuesday morning.

External Affairs Minister Jaishankar will pay a call on him at Hotel Taj Palace in the evening.

On Tuesday, after a wreath-laying ceremony at Rajghat, the Bhutan King will meet Prime Minister Modi at his 7, Lok Kalyan Marg official-residence.

He will meet President Murmu the same evening at Rashtrapati Bhavan, and depart on Wednesday early morning.

The Bhutanese King is accompanied by Foreign Minister Tandi Dorji, and senior officials of the Royal Government of Bhutan.

The visit of the King of Bhutan is in keeping with the long-standing tradition of regular high-level exchanges between the two countries, an official statement said.

India and Bhutan enjoy unique ties of friendship and cooperation, which are characterized by understanding and mutual trust.

The visit would provide an opportunity to both the sides to review the entire gamut of bilateral cooperation and to further advance the close bilateral partnership, including economic and development cooperation, the statement said.

The visit of the Bhutan King comes weeks after officials from Bhutan and China met in Kunming in January and agreed to “push forward” boundary talks

The Bhutan-China border spans around 500 km, and has a lengthy history of territorial disputes.
