Kanakapura: Karnataka Minister and senior BJP leader R Ashoka on Tuesday filed his nomination from Kanakapura constituency for May 10 assembly elections in the state.

Kanakapura is the second seat from where Ashoka has been fielded by the BJP apart from fielding him from his home constituency Padmanabhanagar in Bengaluru Urban District.

This is the ploy to constrain Shivakumar to campaign for Congress across the state. The BJP had employed this tactic in the 2018 election against Siddaramaiah in Badami constituency by fielding B Sriramulu. The Congress leader almost lost as he won the election with a very thin margin.

Sriramulu and Siddaramaiah were also fielded from Molkalmuru and Chamundeshwari, from where the former won and later lost, respectively.

Before filing the nomination, Ashoka showcased his strength as he led a huge number of supporters in a rally.

Meanwhile, Shivakumar has already filed his nomination on Monday after leading a massive rally.

The assembly election in the state will be held on May 10 and results will be declared on May 13.

The last date for filing nominations is April 20 and the last date of withdrawal of nomination is April 24.
