After a Catholic was beaten by a mob in Goa’s Candolim on Sunday, BJP leader from Goa’s Velim, Savio Rodrigues, took to Twitter to condemn the act and said, “As much as I stand against forceful conversion and conversion by allurement; this attack on a practicing Catholic in Goa as reported by @thegoaneveryday is not keeping with the social fabric of Goa and India”.

Rodrigues added, “He merely put banners of a retreat near the Church, Mob acts must be condemned. It is also shocking that the victim refused to file a police complaint”.

This reaction has come in the aftermath of a Catholic being attacked by a mob in Candolim, over his appeal to attend a retreat. As reported by ‘The Goan’, a mob of about 50 unidentified men beat up a person practicing Catholic faith for allegedly converting people of the majority community in Candolim.

According to the victim, Narayan Ingle, a Roman Catholic, he had fixed two banners related to a retreat which is to take place on 26th May, which also had his mobile number, near the Church, after taking due permission from the priest and one near the yard. After which Ingle was called to a spot in the village itself by a few people from the mob, and was questioned and abused for luring people of the majority community to join the said retreat. Following which some individuals got aggressive and slapped and hit him on his head from behind.

Ingle chose not to file an official complaint with the police against the attackers.
