Guwahati: Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma has expressed optimism about resolving long-standing boundary issues among states in the Northeast region, stating that they are nearing amicable solutions.

In a series of tweets, Sarma mentioned that the region had faced not only insurgency but also internal conflicts due to the ad hoc formation of northeastern states by the Congress government, which led to inter-state disputes for over five decades.

CM Sarma attributed the historical geographical isolation, political instability, and imbalanced development in the region to intentional policies adopted by previous Congress governments to divide and rule.

However, he praised the BJP-led NDA government at the Centre for making significant progress in resolving conflicts within the last nine years.

He specifically cited successful resolutions of conflicts such as the Bodo and Karbi issues in Assam, the concerns of the Brus in Mizoram, and the NLFT insurgency in Tripura.

The Chief Minister commended Prime Minister Narendra Modi for his relentless focus on connecting and uniting the Northeast region.

He emphasised that the focus on connectivity extended beyond physical infrastructure, encompassing the establishment of strong emotional ties with the people.

Highlighting the government’s commitment to the region, CM Sarma stated that PM Modi had visited the Northeast region 60 times, and that his council of ministers had made 400 visits in the past nine years.

He pointed out that this level of political engagement was unprecedented, especially considering that some states in the region have only one Member of Parliament in the Lok Sabha.
