Kolhapur / Sindhudurg: On occasion of Navy Day being celebrated at Sindhudurg on Monday evening, Prime Minister Narendra Modi unveiled a 45 feet statue of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj at Rajkot fort.

Navy Day is celebrated every year on December 4 to commemorate and honour the remarkable contributions of the Indian Navy, particularly its role in Operation Trident during the 1971 Indo-Pakistan war.

This year, the Day is celebrated at Sindhudurg fort for the first time, which was built in the 17th century by Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj.

Later, Modi witnessed participation of 20 warships along with 40 aircraft comprising Mig-29K and LCA (Navy) as major attractions along with combat beach reconnaissance and assault demo by the Marrine Commandos (Marcos) of the Indian Navy.

Defence Minister Rajnath Singh, Governor Ramesh Bais, Minister Narayan Rane, Chief Minister Eknath Shinde, Deputy Chief Ministers Devendra Fadnavis and Ajit Pawar and others were present on this occasion.

This is the first time that the Indian Navy had organised a mega event not at any major Naval station.
