KP Sharma Oli sworn-in as Nepal Prime Minister

Kathmandu: CPN-UML Chairman KP Sharma Oli was on Monday sworn in as the prime minister of Nepal at a special function at the president’s residence in Sheetal Niwas, Kathmandu. This is Oli’s fourth stint as the country’s chief executive.

President Ramchandra Paudel administered the oath of office and secrecy to Oli during the function.

On Sunday, President Paudel appointed Oli as the Prime Minister.

President Paudel appointed him as the prime minister according to Article 76 (2) of the Constitution.

Oli has become the new Prime Minister after forging an alliance with the Nepali Congress and withdrawing support to the government led by Maoist Center Chairman Pushpa Kamal Dahal.

On July 12, Pushpa Kamal Daha, chairman of the Maoist Center, failed to win the vote of confidence in the House of Representatives, and was ousted as prime minister.

Soon after the call from the President, 72-year-old Oli, accompanied by his new coalition partner Nepali Congress President Sher Bahadur Deuba, had reached the President’s Office to stake claim for the post of prime minister.

With no other contender, Oli had submitted signatures of 166 lawmakers in his support (Congress’ 88 and UML’s 78). In the 275-strong House of Representatives, the minimum number needed to form a government is 138, Kathmandu Post reported.
