Sri Lankan PM Gunawardena resigns, congratulates President-elect Dissanayake

Colombo: Sri Lankan Prime Minister Dinesh Gunawardena has resigned from his post, following the election of Anura Kumara Dissanayake as the new President and a new government set to take over.

Gunawardena, in a letter addressed to President-elect Anura Kumara Dissanayake has said he is resigning from the post with immediate effect.

In his resignation letter, he stated, ‘I respectfully offer my congratulations to you for being elected as the 9th Executive President of the Democratic Socialist Republic of Sri Lanka in the Presidential election held on September 21, 2024.

“I hope that you as the President will be able to provide welfare to the people by continuing the work we have done to recover and lift the country and the countrymen from the difficult and challenging situation that Sri Lanka has faced,” Sri Lankan newsportal, the Economy Next quoted Gunawardena as saying.
