Cyclone Fengal : Heavy rain lashes Chennai, suburbs, delta dists, landfall this evening

Chennai: Heavy to very heavy rains lashed Chennai, its neighbouring and Cauvery delta districts, as Cyclonic Storm Fengal came close to the Tamil Nadu coast on Saturday, even as Chief Minister M K Stalin reviewed the rain situation with top officials and district collectors.

After a brief lull last evening, the rains, which began this morning, gained in intensity, as it poured in torrents, with northern suburbs recording intense downpour as the Cyclone lay centered about 140 km southeast of Chennai.

Met office has issued Red Alert for Chennai, Kancheepuram, Tiruvallur, Chengalpattu, Villuppura, Cuddalore and Kallakurichi districts, forecasting extremely heavy falls, and
very heavy rains in several districts, including in North coastal and Cauvery delta
districts and interior districts.

From 0400 hrs in the morning till now, Ennore in NOrth Chennai recorded a high of 13 cms of rains, while several locations in the city and suburbs recorded rains in excess of 10 cms.

The intensity of the rains is expected to continue till the cyclone makes its landfall this evening and is likely to continue thereafter, before subsiding.
