Srinagar: Kashmir’s Chief Cleric and Hurriyat Chairman Mirwaiz Umar Farooq on Monday called for a collective action to eradicate the drug menace from the society.

Mirwaiz emphasized the need for collective action to improve societal conditions, particularly focusing on the escalating issue of drug addiction among the youth.

Addressing a congregational gathering at Eidgah today, Mirwaiz highlighted the alarming statistics of over 1.5 million individuals affected by the drug menace and expressed concern besides calling for a united effort to combat this epidemic.

Mirwaiz Umar also expressed appreciation for the intensified efforts by the Jammu and Kashmir police to combat drug trafficking and arresting several drug dealers besides confiscation of their properties.

“It is encouraging to see the administration is taking decisive steps. When good measures are taken for the welfare of our society, they should also be appreciated by all”, he remarked.

He pointed out that the vast network of mosques across the region could serve as pivotal centers in this fight against the drug menace in Kashmir valley.

“Mosque committees can collaborate and implement effective ways to tackle drug addiction in every area,” he said and added “they can keep an eye on suspected people in the area and help in their rehabilitation”.

Mirwaiz stressed upon unified proactive measures, leveraging both religious institutions and law enforcement in the battle against drug addiction and the importance of community and administrative synergy in fostering a safer, healthier society.
