Baramulla, Jan 20: Security forces on Tuesday averted a major tragedy after detecting an improvised explosive device (IED) along the Srinagar Baramulla highway in Baramulla, officials said.
According to officials, the IED was planted by suspected terrorists on the roadside at Takiya Tapper in the Pattan area. The device was spotted by a patrol party during routine surveillance.
A bomb disposal squad was immediately rushed to the spot and efforts are underway to safely neutralise the explosive, officials added.
The incident comes less than a week ahead of Republic Day celebrations, prompting authorities to further tighten security measures. Meanwhile, security across the Kashmir Valley has been stepped up amid apprehensions that terrorists may attempt to carry out subversive activities.
Officials said heightened vigilance and increased patrolling remain in place to ensure public safety.
