Key Takeaways

  • Tripura has received Rs 12.72 Cr under PM Surya Ghar Muft Bijli Yojana to promote rooftop solar.
  • Over 1,848 rooftop solar systems have been installed in Tripura, benefiting 1,859 families.
  • Rooftop solar systems will improve energy reliability and reduce pressure on the conventional power grid.

Agartala: Tripura has received financial assistance of Rs 12.72 Cr so far under PM Surya Ghar Muft Bijli Yojana, the Centre’s flagship rooftop solar initiative aimed at promoting clean and affordable energy at the household level, said the state’s power minister Ratan Lal Nath on Wednesday.

In February 2024, the Centre launched a demand-driven scheme to promote rooftop solar. Since then, 1,848 systems have been installed across Tripura, benefiting 1,859 families with access to renewable electricity and lower power bills.

To support the adoption of rooftop solar in Tripura, the central government has provided support under the scheme, where all residential consumers with grid-connected electricity connections from their respective distribution companies are eligible to apply through the national online portal, with a simplified digital application process that allows households to directly avail subsidies and track installation progress.

He claimed that rooftop solar systems will significantly improve energy reliability for households and ease pressure on the conventional power grid, particularly in Tripura, which largely depends on power sourced from outside the state.

“At the national level, over 20.85 lakh rooftop solar systems have been installed, benefiting more than 26.14 lakh families, with central financial assistance exceeding Rs 14,771 Cr.

The government estimates that installing rooftop solar systems in one crore households will generate about 1,000 billion units of renewable electricity and reduce carbon dioxide emissions by 720 million tonnes over 25-year,” Nath added.

With steady adoption underway, Tripura is gradually aligning itself with the country’s broader clean energy and climate goals through increased household participation in rooftop solar generation
