Srinagar: Union Home Minister Amit Shah laid the foundation stone of ‘Balidan Stambh’ in Srinagar’s Pratap Park, adjacent to the historic Lal Chowk on Saturday.

J&K Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha was also present at the foundation-laying ceremony.

Officials said security was beefed up in the city centre, and traffic was briefly halted until the Home Minister left the venue. The shops in and around Lal Chowk remained open during the Home Minister’s visit to the commercial hub.

Earlier in the day, Shah visited Baltal in the Ganderbal district and took stock of the arrangements for the upcoming Amarnath Yatra, which is scheduled to commence on July 1.

The Home Minister arrived in J&K on Friday and will return to Delhi this afternoon.
