It is a common advice to drink 8 glasses of water daily, which is heard of regularly. But the moot point is whether our body really needs this amount of water daily. A recent study, which was conducted across 23 countries has revealed that this advice is scientifically incorrect. As a matter of fact, some people require to drink only 1.5 to 1.8 litres of water daily. More than half of the body’s demand for water is fulfilled with food items, tea, coffee, etc.

And therefore, it should not be emphasized to drink 8 glasses of water daily. For the same, researchers conducted a study on more than 5 thousand participants, aged between 8 to 96 years, and the results of the study were published in the ‘Science’ magazine, which revealed that the requirement of water is different in each individual, and factors which determine the same are the place where a person lives, weather, temperature, altitude, and humidity. At a more personal level, water requirement of an individual is also determined by their age, gender, nature of work, weight, and fitness.

Men aged between 20 and 30 years, sportspersons, and people involved in physical labour require higher amounts of water. Water requirement among the farmers of developing countries is more as compared to those in industrialized nations, similar to people who live in countries with higher temperatures. Pregnant and lactating women also need more amounts of water. Nevertheless, many people drink water only when they feel thirsty.
