Temperatures in the political arena of the USA have increased amidst the preparations of the mid-term elections. In the meanwhile, the house of Nancy Pelosi, Speaker of the United States House of Representatives, was attacked. The attacker had come to kill Nancy, who was not at home at that point in time, but the assailant attacked Nancy’s husband, Paul Pelosi, with a hammer, and he has been severely injured on the head.

This is not the first time that a member of Congress has been attacked from the intention of killing them. The number of political attacks in the USA is increasing at a high pace. Recently, both Democratic and Republican parliamentarians have had to face attacks. In a study conducted by the Anti-Defamation League, it has been found out that 450 political murders have been committed in one decade, out of which 75%, that is 337 were committed by right-wing extremists, and 4%, by leftist-extremists.

As per the data of the United States Capitol Police, in 2017, a total of 3, 939 cases of lethal threats faced by Congressmen were reported, and in 2021, the number increased around 3 times and reached 9, 625, and as a result, the US police, in the month of July only, had increased the security budget. For the security of every Congressman, 8.23 lakh rupees were increased each. This year too, the number of lethal threats against Congressmen has increased. The US Capitol Police had registered more than 1800 such cases in the first 3 months of 2022 only.
