Srinagar: A famous 20th century Shiva temple in Gulmarg of north Kashmir’s Baramulla district, which enjoys close links to the valley’s history as well as Bollywood, was gutted in a massive fire on Wednesday.

Fire and Emergency Services officials said that the blaze started around 3.50 am causing extensive damage to the religious structure.

Situated atop a hillock, the Rani temple or Mohineshwar Shivalaya, is also famous for Bollywood hit number “Jai Jai Shiv Shankar” starring matinee heartthrob Rajesh Khanna and Mumtaz from film “Aap Ki Kasam” shot in 1974.

Several fire tenders from nearby fire stations were rushed to the spot to douse the flames. The cause of the fire is being ascertained, the officials said.

The Maharani Temple was built by Mohini Bai Sisodhia, wife of Maharaja Hari Singh in 1915.
