Kolkata International Film Festival to kick off on Thursday

Kolkata: The 28th edition of the Kolkata International Film Festival (KIFF), organized by the Information and Cultural Affairs Department, Government of West Bengal, will kick off here on Thursday.

The grand event will continue till December 22.

Accredited by the International Federation of Film Producers’ Association or FIAPF in short, 28th KIFF promises to be more exciting, appealing and satisfying to the cine lovers as they will continue to feel the charm of world class cinema in the City of Joy.

The 28th edition of KIFF will commence on Thursday and conclude on December 22.

Over the period of 8 days, many films and documentaries from across the world will be screened.

Megastar Amitabh Bachchan and Shah Rukh Khan would be the guests of honour at KIFF, while Jaya Bachchan, Rani Mukerji, Kumar Sanu, Mahesh Bhatt and Shatrughan Sinha would also be present at the inaugural function on Thursday, official sources said.

Films from 42 countries will be screened at the 28th Kolkata International Film Festival (KIFF).

While 1,078 films from 57 countries had applied, sources said 180 among them have been selected by the festival committee for screening.

The slogan for the festival is ‘Meet The World at the World of Cinema’. Keeping with the spirit of the slogan, an exhibition of Jean Luc Godard is being held at the Nandan foyer and Nazrul Tirtha.

The festival will also celebrate Amitabh Bachchan’s 80th birthday with the screening of nine of his films and an exhibition.

He will be attending the inauguration along with Jaya Bachchan.

Shah Rukh Khan and Rani Mukherji have also confirmed their attendance.

“Centenary tributes have been organized to pay respect to the craftsmanship of legends like actors Dilip Kumar and Bharati Devi, directors Hrishikesh Mukherjee, Asit Sen, Alain Resnais, Pier Paolo Pasolini, Michael Cacoyannis and K. Asif,” said a source.

“We organized two editions of KIFF in one year due to Covid. So, we had one edition in the beginning of the year and this one in December. It was a big task but thanks to everyone on board who made it possible. Forty-two countries are participating this time.” said Film Director Raj Chakraborty.
