Srinagar: Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) leader Iltija Mufti on Tuesday accused National Conference (NC) of having an “understanding” with the BJP to remain silent on the controversial Waqf (Amendment) Act.

She questioned why the NC did not bring a resolution against the Waqf (Amendment) Act despite the party having 50 legislators in the Assembly.

“Farooq (Abdullah)sahib should tell us about today. His son is the Chief Minister with 50 MLAs. Karnataka, West Bengal, Tamil Nadu decided to bring a resolution against Waqf. Tamil Nadu has already brought it. What was our Chief Minister doing? Why did they not bring a resolution against Waqf,” Iltija said while talking to reporters on Tuesday.

She said the ruling government was busy taking photo-ops with Union minister Kiren Rijiju, at Tulip Garden while critical issues like Waqf were ignored.

“They (NC) already have an understanding with BJP that we will not talk about Waqf and will not bring any resolution against it,” the PDP leader alleged.

Iltija also questioned NC for not bringing a resolution against Waqf despite the fact that Jammu and Kashmir is the only Muslim majority state in India.

“It is not just Muslims in Jammu and Kashmir who are looking up to us. It is also Muslims in the rest of the country.. And this (NC) government has terribly let them down. Because you do not want to talk about Muslim,” she said, while accusing the NC of being in love with power.

She also dismissed the NC’s argument that the Waqf matter was sub-judice, saying, “Even Article 370 is sub-judice, yet they claim to fight for it. Why is Waqf an exception?”

Calling the restoration of statehood a “BJP agenda,” she emphasized that PDP’s struggle goes beyond statehood, aiming for the return of Jammu and Kashmir’s special constitutional position.
