Malé: In a decisive victory, President Mohamed Muizzu’s People’s National Congress has clinched 71 seats out of 93 in the Maldives’ parliamentary elections, local media reported. It underscores a significant political mandate for the China-friendly leader in the tourism-dependent nation.

Muizzu came to power last year, advocating anti-India agenda. His subsequent state visit to China in January and the ensuing agreements on economic, trade, and infrastructure matters further solidified ties with Beijing.

The Maldives’ delicate balancing act between the two Asian giants has long been a central theme in its politics.
