Senegal’s new president, Bassirou Diomaye Faye, appointed Ousmane Sonko as prime minister, a move announced by the presidency on Tuesday.

Sonko, 49, is the current mayor of Ziguinchor and the leader of the PASTEF party, which was dissolved by a presidential decree in July 2023.

Faye, 44, was sworn in earlier Tuesday in Diamniadio, 30 km from Dakar, the capital of Senegal, for a five-year term.

Elected in the first round of the presidential election on March 24 with 54.28 percent of the votes cast, Faye is the fifth president of Senegal since its independence in 1960.
