Tamil Nadu ranks number 1 in hate-crimes

Hatred between different communities on the basis of religion, caste, birth place, language, etc. is augmenting in India. During the last 8 years from 2014 to 2021, a total of 7, 064 such crimes were reported. As per the data of the National Crime Record Bureau (NCRB), in 2014, a total of 323 such cases came to the fore in the country, which increased to 1, 047 in 2021.

From 2018 to 2021, the highest number of hate crimes in the country was recorded in Tamil Nadu, with 665 cases, 564 cases were reported in Uttar Pradesh, while Rajasthan recorded 335 such crimes. As per experts, one major factor behind the rise in hate-crimes in the country is hate-speech and social media posts and comments. During the last 8 years, 349 cases damaging national unity were reported in all.

Hyderabad and Chennai are two such metropolitans which have reported the highest number of hate-crimes in India during the last 4 years. Hyderabad reported 123 such cases while Tamil Nadu witnessed 115 of them. On the other hand, Patna is a city which did not report a single hate-crime since 2018. Rajasthan’s Jaipur recorded 9 cases during the same period, Gujarat’s Surat 28, and Ahmedabad 29.

The top 10 states in cases of hate-crimes are Tamil Nadu, Uttar Pradesh, Andhra Pradesh, Telangana, Rajasthan, Assam, Madhya Pradesh, Maharashtra, Kerala, and Gujarat.
