On 28th June, Tuesday Kanhaiya Lal, 48 worked as a tailor in Udaipur was brutally murdered in broad daylight by two Muslims. Both Muslim men chopped off Kanhaiya Lals head and later uploaded a video of bragging about the murder. The Tailor was murdered only because he supported BJP leader Nupur Sharma on social media. The two accused have been arrested by the police in Bheem near Rajsamand, while they were trying to escape causing tensions in Udaipur. Two men did not stop at bragging, also went on to threaten PM Modi, and called for mass beheadings. These 2 Mohammed Riyaz Akhatar and Mohammed Gos along with 5 other people had been hovering around his shop and one of them threatened Kanhaiya Lal to keep his shop shut or else they would kill him.
On 15th June Kanhaiya Lal had made a complaint to the police as he received death threats, was being harassed by his neighbours for showing support to Nupur Sharma which also led to a suspension of Sub-inspector for nor acting on the complaint to prevent it or even protect Kanhaiya Lal.
According to the police, talks were held between Kanhaiya and his neighbours and the matter was solved after that, which clearly was not the case. Kanhaiya Lal was scared and reportedly his wife told the media that he did not want to go to his shop for a week and it was Tuesday only when he went for the first day, the same day he was murdered.
Kanhaiyas last rites were attended by a huge crowd of people.
Why was Kanhaiya Lal supporting Nupur Sharma, BJP leader?
Nupur Sharma had recently been in the news for passing certain remarks about Prophet Muhammad which weren’t false, the radicals got fired up and created mayhem on Nupur Sharma’s statements. Nupur Sharma received death threats, rape threats, she was provided security for herself and her family. This isn’t the first incident where Radical Islamists have beheaded someone due to intolerance. Free speech, it seems like only exists for the pseudo seculars who feel Hindu lives don’t matter. In 2020, 16th October Samuel Paty was stabbed and beheaded in Conflans- Sainte-Honorine near Paris, outside the school for showing a harmless caricature of Prophet Muhammad.
SP of Udaipur assured of a thorough investigation and that few accused have been identified. After the murder of Kanhaiya Lal, people displayed their anger over murders and hate crimes against Hindus. Rajasthan Police Chief ML Lather said Kanhaiya Lals murder was a planned act of terror and it seems that more people were involved.
Chief Minister of Rajasthan, Ashok Gehlot condemned the murder, assured strict action and asked people to remain calm.
Hindu organizations protested by shutting down their markets in Udaipur following which internet services have been shut temporally. People came on the streets, help up saffron flags and demanded justice for Kanhaiya Lal. While all this happened, liberals were whitewashing the hate crime by stating that it should not be connected to islam which they do for every crime committed by a Muslim justifying it because they are in minority.
It emerged during the investigation that both accused had links with a group based in Pakistan called Dawat-e-islami, also having a record of travelling to Karachi in 2014.
The case has now been handed over to National Investigation Agency (NIA) and the Anti-Terrorism Squad (ATS) & Special Operation Group (SOG) of Rajasthan police.
