19-year-old youth dies during Ajith’s film release celebrations

Chennai: A 19-year-old youth died after a fall from a water tanker while celebrating the release of Ajith Kumar’s Pongal release film “Thunivu”, near a theatre in the city early
this morning.

Police said, the youth, identified as Bharat Kumar, came to the Rohini theatre in Koyambedu to witness the special release of the film screened at 0100 hrs.

As part of celebrations, he and other fans of the actor stopped a water tanker lorry, climbed on top of it and and were dancing when he lost balance, slipped and fell. He was rushed to a nearby hospital where he died.

Actor Ajith Kumar’s film was released by Red Giant movies, had shows starting from 1 am on Wednesday across the State.

Fans of the actor thronged the theatre from midnight occupied the Poonamallee High Road, causing ruckus.

The other much awaited film that was released was actor Vijay’s “Varisu”. After a gap of nearly seven years it was for the first time the films of two leading actors were screened for the Pongal festival.

Fans of both the actors indulged in unruly acts tearing down banners creating a tense atmosphere.

Heavy police presence was deployed in the area and police resorted to mild lathicharge to disperse the crowd.
