Mexico City: At least four people, including a former mayor, were shot dead in Mexico after armed suspects opened fire at a soccer match in the central Morelos state, the local prosecutor’s office said.

The shooting took place at around 9:15 pm local time on Thursday (0215 GMT on Friday) in the town of Yecapixtla after the armed suspects arrived and opened fire on those present.

Two people, including former mayor of Yecapixtla, Refugio Amaro Luna, were killed at the scene, and two others died after being treated at a hospital. Around 10 people were injured, the office said in a statement on Friday.

Violent crimes have been on the rise in Morelos, which also ranks first in terms of kidnapping rates nationwide, according to the Mexican Defense Ministry.
