Bengaluru: Karnataka Industries Minister Murugesh Nirani has said the state government is planning to build another airport in Bengaluru to ease pressure on the Kempegowda International Airport in Devanahalli.

The government is also planning to build an airport in between Tumakuru and Sira, within a time period of 10 years, the minister said.

“We are planning to open one more airport in between Tumkuru and Sira within 10 years. We are also thinking of building one more airport in Bengaluru to ease pressure on KIA,” he said replying to a UNI query on the sidelines of an event conducted by the Federation of Karnataka Chambers of Commerce (FKCCI) here late Thursday.

The plan to build the airport between Tumakuru and Sira comes in the wake of setting an industrial corridor on 1,000 acres.

Five more new airports will be constructed within 18 months, taking the total number of airports to 16 in Karnataka, Nirani said.

“As many as 11 airports are there in Karnataka. Another five are coming in different districts. Every 100 km one airport or air strip is in Karnataka,” he said.

The new airports and air strips are coming up in Bagalkot, Raichur, Koppal, Dabanagere and Chikmagaluru, Nirani said.

Economic activity will increase if regional connectivity and air passenger traffic improve in the state, the minister said.
