In a recent survey conducted by Local Circle, among 65000 people across 309 districts of the country, the effects of the implementation of the Swachch Bharat mission have come out to the fore. 48% people who participated in the survey are from tier-1 districts of the country, 31% from tier-2, and 21% from tier 3 and 4 and rural backgrounds.
It has been found out that 6 people out of every 10 believe that after 8 years of the introduction of the scheme, the accountability of institutions has now increased. On the other hand, 41% people are still not content with the cleanliness levels of public toilets, and believe that no difference has been made during the last 8 years in the condition of public toilets which are being operated. On top of it, 11% of people believe that the condition has deteriorated.
Out of the 26,629 answers received about the working condition of the public toilets, another 27% believe that slight difference has been made, while 16% think that significant improvements have been made, while 5% of the participants said that nothing can be said. A mixed reaction was received when the participants were asked about their complaints regarding roads getting cleaned and the services to pick up garbage. While 38% were of the opinion that the officers and workers are negligent in this matter, 50% believe that only a little bit of positive change has been made. 7% think that the workers have no accountability at all. While 2% said that nothing could be stated, 3% were of the opinion that accountability of workers increased.
On the question of the scheme being able to spread awareness among children and bringing in changes with regards to their attitude towards cleanliness, 25% participants believed that the scheme has proved to be effective in making children aware, 38% think that the mission is somewhat effective in brining changes in the children’s behaviour. On the other hand, 29% are of the opinion that the scheme is not effective at all with regards to the same.
