CJI asked to name successor

New Delhi: The Union Law Ministry on Friday asked Chief Justice Uday Umesh Lalit to name his successor.

As per the rules, statute and convention, Justice Dr D Y Chandrachud has to be recommended by the present CJI to head the Supreme Court in order of seniority.

Justice Dr Chandrachud is the second most senior judge of the Supreme Court.

CJI Lalit retires on November 8 and Justice Dr Chandrachud will take oath as the 50th CJI on November 9.
