Chennai: The Tamil Nadu Government is taking all steps to prevent Karnataka from constructing a new dam across River Cauvery at Mekedatu, while urging the Centre to set up a Water Disputes Tribunal as per the orders of the Supreme Court, Governor R.N.Ravi told the State Assembly today.

Delivering his customary New Year address to the House, he said this Government is committed to strongly asserting its rights on inter-State river disputes, while maintaining friendly relations with neighbouring States.

This Government will not permit any act that would be detrimental to the farmers of Tamil Nadu and is taking all necessary steps to prevent the construction of Mekadatu dam.

This Tamil Nadu Government also urges the Centre that a Water Disputes Tribunal may be constituted at the earliest as per the orders of the Supreme Court, on the issue of unauthorized diversion of water from Pennaiyar river by Karnataka.

On the Mullai Periyar dam row with Kerala, the Governor said the reservoir level in Mullai Periyar dam is presently at 142 feet and the Government is taking all efforts to further increase it.
